When baking a chocolate cake you can substitute the water, vegetable oil, and eggs with one can of Diet Coke. The cake is just as delicious and even more moist than a regular cake! If baking a white cake you can use one can of Diet Sprite or Diet 7up. Since it is basically just the cake mix you are eating even after it is "prepared" you save about 60 calories if not more depending on how many eggs or how much vegetable oil your cake mix calls for. Also you can add fat free Cool Whip for topping instead of icing or regular Cool Whip. I like to call it the Diet Coke Cake!

You can also substitute applesauce in recipes that call for orange juice or sugar.

Others:
Baking chocolate - substitute 3 Tbsp. of cocoa powder and 1 Tbsp. oil
1 cup ice cream = Low-fat or Fat-Free frozen yogurt
Nuts = Dried Fruit
1 cup light cream = 1 cup evaporated skim milk or 2 tbsp oil and skim milk
1 cup shortening or lard = 3/4 cup vegetable oil

I use diet coke with ketchup for BBQ chicken. It is an easy meal to prepare and my husband just loves it.

I've recently started using unsweetened applesauce in any recipe that calls for oil. The swap is simple (1/2 cup oil = 1/2 cup applesauce)and I've used it in muffins, cookies, cakes and they all taste great. It saves hundreds of calories and you don't even notice they are gone!
