Q: How much physical activity do I need to gain some benefit?

A: Every bit of physical activity will benefit your health.  However, each age group does have recommendations for how much physical activity they should be getting each day.

Dr. Tim Bungum breaks the recommendations down by age group for us:

Kids and teens recommendation: Be active for one hour. Participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity most days of the week, preferably daily.

Adult recommendation: 30 minutes each day. Adults should engage in moderate-intensity physical activity for at least 30 minutes on five or more days of the week

Older Adult recommendation: 30 minutes each day. All adults should engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on five or more days of the week.

Moderate intensity level should be able to carry on a conversation comfortably while engaging in the activity.

Instead of e-mailing or calling a colleague, try to walk over to their work area and speak to them personally. Pace while talking on the phone, park your car far away— it also saves your car doors from dings! Try to get extra steps anywhere you can.

Another thing I try to do is take the stairs whenever it is possible. At my work site I walk up the stairs at least 5 times a day. It does not seem like a lot. But I work on the 4th floor. It really ads up.

I try to walk, not drive, to my mailbox to check the mail. It takes a little extra time but if I haven’t done anything active that day, at least I am getting a little burst of fitness. Every bit counts right?!

After dinner I make sure my family goes for a short walk before they start watching TV.

I really enjoy the walking trail by my house and walking on it can help me relieve stresses from the day.

I just stopped by your blog and thought I would say hello. I like your site design. Looking forward to reading more down the road.

I jump rope during my lunch break. On bad weather days I do walking lunges, situps and pushups. If you work close to a gym, you can get a great 30 minute cardio workout in!
